The background was not the first idea in this painting. Inspiration brought the idea of thick swirls in dark and mysterious colors but the background remained a mystery. The background was decided the minute the canvas was opened. A rich but muted background with gold adding to the idea of luxury. The thick somewhat feminine colors are also somewhat masculine or dominating that seem to want to escape or are twisted in a world of not belonging.
